House Staffers Urge Cafeteria Boycott

An informal group of House staffers are organizing a Tuesday boycott of the Longworth House Office Building cafeteria after a longtime employee was placed on leave earlier this week.

It remains unclear exactly why Doris Cherry was suspended from her duties at the cafeteria on Wednesday, although rumors are circulating that she was cited for being short money at her cash register.

Accounts of just how much money was short at the register differ. But according to one knowledgeable House source, Cherry was short cash on a few occasions totaling nearly $30.

A spokeswoman for Restaurant Associates, the vendor in charge of managing the cafeterias, could not be immediately reached for comment.

In a statement, the Office of the Chief Administrative Officer, which oversees Restaurant Associates contract with the chamber, said it does not manage day-to-day operations of the cafeteria.

“Vendors under contract to the House of Representatives operate their businesses according to their own practices and procedures. And some, like RA, also manage personnel in accordance with a union contract,” the statement reads. “The CAO is confident that any personnel actions RA chooses to take are justified, done in the interest of fairness and executed with due diligence, fully complying with all of the United Food and Commercial Workers Union Local 25’s policies and procedures.”

Still, the suspension has outraged many House staffers, who are ignoring their partisan differences and banding together to show support for Cherry.

In an e-mail forwarded to hundreds of House employees on Thursday afternoon, organizers asked staffers to boycott the Longworth cafeteria on Tuesday. They also urged staffers to avoid all House cafeterias — since all are run by Restaurant Associates — but “realize that’s difficult during a day we’re in session.”

“Please, if nothing else avoid Longworth,” the e-mail reads.

Cherry has worked in the House for more than 30 years, nearly two decades as a Longworth cafeteria cashier. In 2004, she was named Employee of the Year by Guest Services, which ran the cafeterias at the time.

“This has outraged many of us who have seen her virtually every day for years,” the e-mail reads. “She is certainly one of the most beloved cafeteria workers and her dedication to customer service is exceptional.”

Doris should take the 9 dollars she stole and buy Jim Demint and Harry Reid a cab ride to Trinidad. Let the locals sort them out.

"Message sent from USCP Command Center to Senators and Senate office staff designated to receive emergency alerts - DO NOT RESPOND TO THIS EMAIL

The US Capitol Police are responding to a suspicious package at First and D Street, NE.  All staff and other personnel are directed to avoid this area until further notice...bad"

I'm sure that "bad" is  probably just someones initials, but maybe they could NOT end a security alert that way?

Unfuckingbelievable.  She's the single best thing about Restaurant Associates.  She's been there since I started, and that's at least 12 years ago.  She always is kind, courteous, and appreciative..... unlike so many other employees down there.

They can have their damn biodegradable cups.

If you are in Cannon, Pete's Diner is right up the street.

You will get more, for cheaper, and it tastes a hell of a lot better.

By the way, people: it's the Tom-nibus this weekend.

And Doris rules!  Free Doris!  No justice, no peace!

SCREW Restaurant Associates.   I'm joining the boycott.  Miss. Doris must be avenged!

Any truth to this?

TUESDAY LONGWORTH CAFETERIA BOYCOTT

Many of you likely know "little" Doris, who has been a cashier in the Longworth Cafeteria for decades.  Wednesday morning Doris was suspended without pay (or fired by some accounts) for being $9 short at her register.  This has outraged many of us who have seen her virtually every day for years.  She is certainly one of the most beloved cafeteria workers and her dedication to customer service is exceptional.  On Tuesday, we hope to join in a show of support for Doris by boycotting the cafeterias.  Since all the cafeterias are owned by the Restaurant Associates we ask that you avoid all of them that day, but we realize that’s difficult during a day we’re in session.  Please, if nothing else avoid Longworth.

Sen. Dodd's story is full of holes

Looks like Sen. Christopher Dodd needs to re-recast his story about his
dealings with Countrywide Financial. In June, portfolio.com
revealed he and other bigwigs got discounted loans from Countrywide
under the "Friends of Angelo" program, named for and run by CEO Angelo
Mozilo. Sen. Dodd initially denied getting the VIP treatment when he
and his wife refinanced two mortgages in 2003. But he later changed his
lie, admitting Countrywide had extended them VIP loans, not because he
was on the Senate Banking Committee, but because they browbeat a flunky
loan officer into lowering the rates.

But that lie doesn't jibe with the recollections of the loan officer, Robert Feinberg, according to portfolio.com's
latest reporting. As the Friends of Angelo gatekeeper from 2000-04, he
dealt exclusively with customers such as the Dodds "whom his superiors
had singled out for special treatment." Mr. Feinberg says he approved
the Dodds' two mortgage applications in 2003 and two others in 2004,
details of which have not been disclosed. Though Mr. Feinberg "says he
didn't tell borrowers exactly how many points were waived on their
loans, he says he told them that their fees were waived and usually
assured them that they were getting special treatment or the Friends of
Angelo discount." He said he spoke with Sen. Dodd "once or twice" and
frequently e-mailed or talked with the senator's wife, Jackie Clegg. So
Sen. Dodd knew full well what was going on.

Countrywide's former
managing director, Sidney Lenz, said the company's lobbyists
"identified potential customers on Capitol Hill and in federal agencies
and directed them to the VIP program," and "were 'incredibly receptive'
to loan requests from officials." Portfolio.com
did not say whether Countrywide lobbyists got Sen. Dodd and Mr.
Feinberg together, but the dots are easily connected. So much for Sen.
Dodd's claim he and the missus "shopped around" for the best rates.

The
VIP loans saved the Dodds $75,000, and Sen. Dodd, now chairman of the
Banking Committee, repaid Countrywide's kindness by writing a bill that
when it becomes law soon is expected to save Countrywide's successor
$20 billion. The Senate Ethics Committee is investigating whether Sen.
Dodd violated rules that bar him from accepting preferential loans, or
knowingly accepting gifts — that includes loan terms that are
unavailable to the public — from companies such as Countrywide that
employ registered lobbyists.

Sen. Dodd can save the committee time and effort by coming clean and admitting the gene of political corruption breeds true.
